One thing I often hear when I am out and about networking and meeting people is that they don’t want or need to hire a sports marketing consultant.
If pushed as to WHY I’m often given answers such as ‘it’s a luxury we can’t afford’ or ‘we’re doing okay as we are’ or ‘we just don’t have the budget for that’.
I know what a lot of people are thinking when they hear the word ‘consultant’ It comes under the same category as ‘coach’ in some people’s minds.
Some see consultants as a flouncy title for someone to come in and tell you how to do something you already know how to do and then charge you for it. And, essentially, that is true. Most consultants are in that position because they have unprecedented experience in their field. They have done it all and they KNOW what works. They’re not feeling their way in the dark or trying lots of different initiatives to see what works. They know what works. To the enth degree and they produce results.
All that being said it isn’t just for their experience that you should work with a consultant but let’s cover that one off to begin with. So..why should you hire a sports marketing consultant?
Experience – A consultant can save you time and money by walking in with a ready made, tailored and foolproof plan all wrapped up and ready to go. You could spend man hours putting together your own plan of course and then tweaking it as you go or you could invest in working with someone else who can work with you to get those results quickly. Yes there is a cost involved but you would save yourself time and money in the long run.
Return on investment – If the consultant you’re working with is working with you on something such as filling your venue or arena with bodies then you are going to make a return on your investment. The consultant needs to work with you on a plan that does as you ask. Fill your venue. You only need to look at the revenue you will bring in by working on this plan versus the cost of a consultant to see that you are going to make money by working with them.
Outside eyes – Sometimes you can be so close to your business or your product it can be hard to take an objective look at what it is you’re doing. Having an external consultant work with you can really help to bring a level or experience and objectivity to see if what you’re currently doing is really working and whether or not it could be improved.
So, if you are thinking, we don’t have the budget for that or that it’s a luxury you can’t afford why not look at it from a different angle. Would working with a consultant MAKE you more money than you would spend? Ask yourself what value an experienced consultant could bring to your business. Investing in marketing is one of THE best things you can do. A very good friend of mine uses the phrase ‘if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’.
You might be ticking along nicely OR you might be one meeting away from breaking through that glass ceiling and into a new category. All for a little investment and working with the right people.
